The elite liberal bias in reporting was never more in evidence than during the zealous attacks by our local newspapers, including The Herald, on both Tim Eyman and his efforts to provide citizens with tax relief. The same reporting then becomes muted when elitist liberals such as Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen complain about the lack of a French chef and private dining facilities for state senators in Olympia. These are the senators who voted for huge state tax increases and then tried to preclude the electorate from voting on them.
The citizens of Washington state who own homes or cars are surely indebted to Tim Eyman. He has been able to force a large reduction in outrageously high car tab fees and is responsible for the successful passage of Initiative 747, which reduces the chance of unfairly high tax increases being automatically imposed upon homeowners.
Passage of I-747 has already brought significant tax relief to numerous homeowners in Island County. The Island County assessor, who was elected eight years ago, publicly noted that he had not seen a decline in property tax rates until this year and attributed the current reduction solely to I-747.
Tim Eyman’s courageous efforts have helped to protect ordinary people, both working and retired, from governmental greed. This greed, if left unchecked, would tax citizens out of their private homes and autos while at the same time provide state senators with private dining facilities and French chefs.
