Hi, Mom!

Is Mom making cookies? In recognition of Mother’s Day — you didn’t forget, did you? — Herald readers have written in with some of the best advice their mothers gave them over the years.

One lesson The Buzz and his younger siblings learned from their beloved mother: She knew how to use a wooden spoon for more than making cookie dough.

  • Jumping the Snake (or the Shark?): Robbie Knievel, the son of the late daredevil Evel Knievel, says he hopes to attempt a motorcycle jump that ended in failure for his father in 1974, leaping the Snake River Canyon in a “Skycycle.” Evel’s rocket-powered bike failed to clear the canyon when its parachute deployed too early and lowered Evel to the river below.

    If the jump is successful, NASA says it may ask Knievel to use his Skycycle to ferry astronauts to the International Space Station.

  • Sonic boom: Japan says it is making progress in developing an advanced supersonic airliner capable of flying twice the speed of sound.

    Among the engineering hurdles the Japanese team must solve is figuring out a way to prevent the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder owner Clay Bennett from hijacking something with the name “supersonic” attached to it and taking it to Oklahoma.
