I am saddened by Colin Powell’s resignation – and by the choice of his probable successor. Powell, I believe, was seen as useful by an administration on its first time around. They have used him and thrown him away. Condoleezza Rice will be in lock step with President Bush, another cog in a disastrous policy. Powell was blamed for his United Nations speech about hidden weapons. If many were fooled by false and/or inaccurate information, why was Powell the scapegoat? Powell knows what war is. The president apparently doesn’t, or doesn’t care.
A secretary of state should pursue diplomacy to the last possible moment. Isn’t that part of his job description?
I mourn the 1,000-plus dead and hundreds and hundreds wounded – many of the latter now face a horribly rough road through life. Every soldier who has or will serve in Iraq, I respect. Let’s be sure we, and our government, do the very best for them financially and in every way.
Billions to fight, then rebuild Iraq, brings forth a cogent question: When will we be in Iran?
