The United States and the world have been remembering President Jimmy Carter and his legacy. Known for his compassion, he brought attention to the plight and dignity of individuals in the U.S. and the world. He worked to house the poor, volunteering with Habitat For Humanity, and worked with USAID to eliminate the neglected but lethal disease of river blindness. As USAID administrator Samantha Power said. “He changed the world for good.”
Learning from this legacy, if we truly want to make America great, we, as constituents, can urge Congress to take the following steps.
In the United States, in 2024, more than 770,000 people were homeless. Passing a Renters Tax Credit would help renters afford housing. Reinstating the full Child Tax Credit for families earning less than $200,000 would also lesson the burden of housing costs. Funding the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) that grows with inflation insures that families will have quality nutrition and not suffer from food insecurity.
On the world stage, the Global Fund fights AIDS, TB, and malaria, strengthens health and community systems, and prepares for future pandemics. Over the past 2 decades, 65 million lives have been saved. This fund needs to be replenished this year.
Please call your representative are Sens. Patty Murray, and Maria Cantwell and urge them to support these issues. You may reach them at: 202-224-3121.
