Thursday’s Herald carries an Associated Press story about the appointment of Archbishop Peter Sartain of Seattle to oversee reform of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, an organization of nuns in the United States. (“Vatican orders crackdown on U.S. nun association.”) He will be assisted by two bishops from the Midwest.
It seems that the Vatican is displeased with the nuns’ focus on social justice issues and wants the Leadership Conference to be investigated and changed. Perhaps the nuns will be advised to turn away from their concern with health care, education and poverty, and spend their time arguing about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.
Missing from this story is any indication that the nuns themselves will be involved in the review process. The time is long past when women have to put up with being bossed around by men. Nuns have spoken out against this priest-dominated review process and I hope they will continue to do so.
