Regarding the article “Hit the road for a scenic fall drive” in Sunday’s Travel and Leisure section:
Let me get this straight. I live in Everett, Washington, and I read this article in the Everett Herald, which talks about getting out for a country drive in the fall.
I eagerly jumped ahead to the body of the article thinking that I’d get to read about picturesque orchards, charming wineries/vinyards, or antiquing in some of the smaller rural communities. You know, the kinds of things that would make you feel like you were walking through a painting, right here in our home state! I’d guessed maybe something about a beautiful trip to/through the San Juan Islands to do some whale watching against the backdrop of changing seasons.
Silly me, what I fool I was. I opened the T&L section, eager to read about hitting the road for a scenic fall drive … and proceed to read about Cottonwoods near San Diego, Calif., or Elk spotting in Colorado, or (my favorite) 58 hand-painted murals at the St. Ignatius Mission in Montana — hey, look, they mentioned that it’s not far off U.S. 2! I was disgusted! Please note: I’m not going to take a scenic “fall drive” to Montana for the weekend.
I personally love the idea of this article and hope The Herald will get one of its writers to put together a version for those of us who are interested in “fall drives” in our own state!
