With the upcoming presidential election gearing ever higher, I question President Bush’s rhetoric about the value of family. If he is such a firm believer in maintaining a strong family unit, perhaps he can explain why, especially in light of his “economic upturn” and his “upward trend” in unemployment, my husband is having to go out of state to get a job. He was laid off six months ago, after working steadily for more than 25 years, paying his taxes faithfully and supporting his family. Can someone please tell me why he is no longer able to do this in the place where he has made his home? I cannot accompany him, either, because I must remain here and keep my job so we can make ends meet. In the current economic environment, I’d have to be an idiot to take food out of my children’s mouths on the off chance that I could get a job elsewhere.
While George and his wealthy supporters boast about the benefits his regime (yes, regime) have given to their inner circle, my once financially secure family unit is fraying around the edges. We’ll survive, though, and we will thrive because when November rolls around those of us in the middle class are going to the polls to let Mr. Bush know that we are mad as hell and we are not going to take it anymore.
