I am writing in regard to Robert Waddell’s May 15 letter titled, “AIDS: Liberal press fails to tell the truth.” In his letter he states that AIDS comes from a deviant lifestyle.
Ryan White was a child from Indiana who contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion as he had a congenital condition called hemophilia. He was then barred from school in 1986 at the age of 13 and had to battle within the court system to be allowed to attend school. Sadly, he died at 19. Deviant? Certainly not. He was a human being, just like the rest of us. I know there are many more stories similar to Ryan’s. And I’m sure there are many more stories that Mr. Waddell would label deviant. It’s always so much easier to label others, it comes with less responsibility.
I hope Mr. Waddell enjoys his view from your moralistic high ground. I’m down here in the real world, trying to raise my children to be responsible adults, while I hope and pray that everyday they treat each human being as an equal. That’s me “fessing up.”
