Contrary to statements made in a recent letter to the editor, there are a multitude of facts on the side of those who are skeptical about the extent of human involvement in global climate change.
Fact: There were several warming and cooling periods in the past millennium. One of those cycles contributed to the spread of the Black Plague.
Fact: By far the most prevalent greenhouse gas in our atmosphere is water vapor.
Fact: Volcanic eruptions over countless centuries have poured far more “bad stuff” into the air than any man-made activity.
Fact: The worst hurricane in U.S. history hit Key West with 235 mph winds in 1935.
Fact: the worst blizzard in history hit the northeast in ‘88 (1888).
Fact: Extreme droughts hit the southwest in the 1880s, the 1930s and the 1950s.
Fact: Strong hurricanes hit the northeast in 1938, 1955, 1957 and 1972.
Fact: We do not know the full extent of the impact on weather of variables like the wobble of the Earth’s rotation, changes in distance from the sun in the earth’s orbit, and changes in the sun’s energy output (solar flares).
