Regardless of how our information age and “breaking news” mindset has made us feel anxious to get quick results, our laws allow for due process and deliberation, especially when voting.
If Dino Rossi were trailing by 42 votes after the mandatory recount, the Republican Party would surely ask for and get a hand recount, as allowed for by state law, and rightly so. To think he would graciously bow out of the race and concede, as some voters suggest Christine Gregoire should do, would be unnecessary and absurd.
The only real difference between the likely responses to a razor-thin election is that Rossi and the Republicans would have needed just one day to raise the $730,000 for a statewide hand recount, instead of the week it took Gregoire and the Democrats.
