When I picked up a copy of The Herald Wednesday morning and looked at the sports page, I was shocked and appalled to see that the OKC Thunder got front page top billing in the sports section. Now, I understand that the Thunder used to be the Seattle Supersonics, but it is also my understanding that city of Seattle pretty much “let” Mr. Bennett walk out of that city with the team, the records, and the history leaving us the logo, name, and team colors….and no one really cared much about it.
No, I don’t believe it was right for Bennett to take the team history and the trophy the Sonics earned in ‘79 with him, but at the same time I don’t think we should hang on to something that isn’t ours anymore (especially when we let it go in the first place). Let’s leave the OKC Thunder in Oklahoma City where they belong.
The NBA Finals no longer concerns Seattle. I do hope we can get the Sonics back some day, but for now I would rather see a front sports page story of the Mariners losing then an OKC victory that means nothing.
