I can’t help but respond to Peter Jackson’s Sunday opinion piece, “A vision we can fulfill.” When discussing opposition to expansion of the North Cascades National Park, Mr. Jackson states, “Bear hunters will lose some hunting ground.” That’s a gross understatement.
If the folks at the American Alps Legacy Project get their way, bear hunters, deer hunters, grouse hunters and other small game hunters will lose access to more than 237,000 acres of public land. Not only would this loss impact multiple game management units, it would completely eliminate GMU 426. That’s not just a few bear hunters losing some ground as Mr. Jackson wants us to believe.
Any discussion of such a proposal needs to be done openly and honestly. The real impacts to users need to be fully addressed and not just breezed over with half-truths.
