The Nov. 7 letter, “U.S. military: Bush’s confidence seems fairly new,” which berates President Bush for his change in attitude about the military, misses the point.
Indeed the military did change on Jan. 20. This was brought about by changes in the White House, the State Department and the Pentagon on that date. Leaders – not just political appointees – assumed command.
A true leader has respect for subordinates and receives respect in return. This results in improved morale at all levels of an organization, which in turn improves performance. Also important is the pay package proposed by President Bush and supported by all his administration and passed by the House and Senate.
Yes, there was a transformation. At the top. We now have leaders.
