The recent articles regarding legalization of marijuana to smoke are interesting, but people underestimate the potential of the commercial and industrial applications of this plant.
Industrial hemp is the strongest natural fiber in the natural world and the possibilities and applications are endless. It can be used in textiles and paper production, reducing the need for timber harvesting and cotton production. The hemp plants require little to no irrigation, pesticides or fertilizers and will grow in virtually all soil types and climates. It can be harvested using standard equipment by our very own American farmers all across our 50 states.
The seeds have oils and materials that can be used in food processing and industrial applications, and even can be used to feed livestock. Growing and harvesting this crop is something that should be done in the U.S and has been done in areas of Canada for many years. Hemp is a crop that can be easily grown and does not deplete soils of nutrients like other crops, offering farmers a crop they can plant yearly and consistently.
In this “green friendly” environment, we have a plant that is truly “green friendly” and can be produced and harvested cheaply and efficiently. Hemp is a crop that grows quickly and if we develop hybrids there are endless possibilities for this untapped plant. I have been “pro-hemp” for years; I know the potential is there for this amazing plant. Industrial hemp has no THC (what gets you high); there is no reason for the government to not allow American farmers to produce it.
