In response to Lyn Neuhardt’s letter on Jan. 3, “We are repairing what we blew up”:
Yes, it is possible that we blew up some buildings that we were repairing. However, it is also possible that some of the buildings were blown up by the insurgents. They do not care what or who they blow up. Americans, British, Iraqis – it makes no difference to them. Oil pipelines, water lines, roads, hospitals, schools, places of worship, homes – it makes no difference to them. Just the bang and the fact that if they die in the process they will become martyrs.
Let’s not forget Saddam Hussein. He used schools, hospitals and mosques to store weapons. If the Iraqi citizens seem afraid to defend themselves, remember that Saddam was a dictator who killed for fun and would kill anyone who opposed his ideas. I remember the pictures of the warehouse full of dead bodies. He took money for the oil for food program to build himself more presidential palaces filled with gold toilets and fixtures. He should have used the money for his citizens but chose to ignore their needs for his own selfish pride and to control his people.
We are fortunate enough to live in the greatest country in the world. We are guaranteed the freedom to disagree with our president and our government and we do not have to worry about being dragged out of our house and shot for it. I hope and pray that this war will be over soon after the first real democratic election is held in Iraq, and that the insurgents realize their tactics did not work. Our brave men and women will truly deserve a hero’s welcome and I will again be at the parade in their honor.
