Regarding the April 7 letter critiquing the employment process at Verizon Communications. (“Computer makes hiring decisions”).
First, employers, not applicants, determine the process of screening applicants. In fact, the radio spots for potential Verizon employees state that written tests are administered before interviews are conducted.
Second, the writer was determined to be unqualified to continue the application process because she failed a mandatory pre-employment test. The test is computer based, but the criteria for passing the exam is not determined by a computer as she implied in her letter.
Last, it defies common sense to assert, as she did, that being interviewed by a human prior to taking a required pre-employment exam is any way relevant. Had she been interviewed and then tested, she would have failed the exam. As a result, no offer of employment would have been extended to her. The outcome would have been exactly the same.
Perhaps in the future, the writer will take an active part in pre-employment screening rather than deciding that the process is invalid. Her results might have been more favorable for her.
By the way, I applied for the same position 16 years ago. I passed all of the required tests and also passed the interview process. GTE/Verizon has been a positive, rewarding career. Did I mention that I have a heart?
