I applaud the IRS’s recent decision to not strip a liberal Pasadena church of its tax-exempt status for a sermon criticizing the president and the war in Iraq days before the 2004 presidential election.
The IRS has for too long politicized churches by not letting them speak out on what they believe. Churches should not be forced into politics and phoniness by our government in violation of the freedom of religion clause of the First Amendment. Now, if the IRS is consistent, churches will be able to tell congregations what they believe without the threat of losing tax-exempt status.
