Well, we finally know the price of a human life according to the Legislature – $6 million. That’s right, $6 million. The Herald Editorial Board endorsed the Legislature’s proposal to open Sundays to hard liquor sales by the bottle (“Sunday liquor sale ban a relic of a different era,” Feb. 24). The two reasons stated are a possible $6 million in revenues to the state coffers and, in The Herald’s opinion, “the right thing to do from a consumer convenience standpoint.”
So, let me get this straight. Because of budget shortfalls in the billions, let’s open liquor stores every day of the month, including Sundays, for an additional $6 million, since “every bit helps.” In addition, since our time is squeezed in this hectic world, we just don’t have enough time to grab that extra bottle the other six days of the week.
This is just another example of state-sponsored hypocrisy and irresponsibility. The state sells liquor but decries alcoholism, DUIs, etc. Now it wants to increase the opportunities for all of these ills. In addition it was very sad for The Herald to endorse this position. So, to the families of any additional victims of this legislation, my condolences, but hey, at least the state gets $6 million.
