The question voters should be asking themselves is not whether Rick Larsen is vulnerable (Sept. 23 news article: “GOP Hopes Rick Larsen is Vulnerable”), but whether he in fact is representing the 2nd Congressional District as well as he should. Especially in light of the current debate over Iraq and Saddam Hussein.
Congressman Larsen’s own congressional Web site states, “I believe Saddam Hussein is a menace to the region. He has used chemical weapons against the Iraqi people and I believe he will use chemical and biological weapons again. I do not believe that this threat can be ignored, but first strikes are not the answer. Rather, we must use diplomacy and international law to address the situation.”
There you have it; our own representative to the United States Congress acknowledging the very present danger Iraq poses to his own constituents, yet unwilling to take action. What would Larsen suggest we do should this diplomacy fail – as it has for the last 11 years? Larsen has been speaking out on the side of the United Nations and Saddam Hussein so eloquently lately it is enough to make me wonder if he believes he is a member of the Iraqi parliament.
