Up to now, the Bush administration has taken a hard-nosed position on the many fictions it propagated before the war. It has defiantly defended every one of its misleading assertions, including the Saddam/al-Qaida connection, weapons of mass destruction, and the absurd notion that an empty-handed Saddam posed a security risk to Americans.
So, many of us are surprised at the 180-degree “about face” that the administration has taken in the last few days. In just one week all the main characters (Rice, Bush, Rumsfeld and Cheney) have made public statements trying to distance themselves from the arguments they used prior to the war. Maybe they all had a “road to Damascus” experience in the Oval Office that they’re not telling us about? Or, maybe it’s just another of Karl Rove’s political calculations, intended to put some daylight between Mr. Bush and the deceptions that led to war.
