The Friday letter, “Obama puts Israel, us in peril,” uses misinformation to insult President Obama and justify illegal acts by Israel. The writer contends that the wall (and fence) constructed by Israel follows the 1967 cease-fire line, also known as the Green line. Were this true, then he would be correct that Israel had the legal right to build the wall. The writer might also be in agreement with President Obama that Israel should return to the Palestinians land beyond the green line (or provide the Palestinians land of equal value).
Unfortunately, the facts don’t support his argument. The wall extends miles beyond the cease-fire lines, seizes some of the West Bank’s most valuable land and water resources and takes Palestinian land for subsidized housing for about 300,000 Israelis. As an added insult to the Palestinians, with minor exceptions, only Jewish Israeli citizens qualify for the subsidized settlement housing on land where Jews, Christians and Muslims once lived together in peace.
It is not President Obama who places the U.S. in peril, it is actions by the State of Israel.
