This is in response to the May 29 letter “Time for Israel to tear down wall.” First of all, what a historically inaccurate notion to compare the Israelis’ attempt to keep suicide bombers out to Communist East Germany’s attempt to keep people in.
Does the gentleman who wrote the letter not understand the reason the Berlin Wall went up versus the reason the wall in Israel went up? Israelis were suffering on a very regular basis with suicide bombers blowing up buses, cafes, discos and the like. So they put up a wall. Guess what? No more suicide bombers. If your neighbor kept murdering members of your family, I suspect you’d do more than put up a wall. But that is what the Israelis did. And they are to blame?
I have true compassion for the poor Palestinians and their situation. But perhaps instead of always blaming the Jews because they wanted to stop the suicide bombers, they might want to look at their own government, Hamas, which is a terrorist organization whose stated (and written) goal is to kill all of the Jews.
Israel has every right to protect herself against those who would seek to do her harm. Once her neighbors stop trying to destroy her, I’m certain Israel would be happy to tear down that wall.
