We can only imagine some of the negative letters that will follow after the publication of the article, “Providence loses $4.3 million in first quarter.” We could go on to document the public medical need for the recent expansion and the jobs it provides to our community, but we thought instead it may be useful to discuss a little-known fact about our first-class medical facility.
Providence has a mission statement that sums up its commitment to this community: “As People of Providence we reveal God’s love for all, especially the poor and vulnerable, through our compassionate service.”
Did you know that last year Providence gave back nearly $67 million to our community? Over half of that amount was composed of free and discounted care for the needy, subsidized services such as the Intervention Center for Assault and Abuse and community services such as patient education, health screening and immunizations. The remainder went to cover unfunded portions of government-sponsored medical care.
The hospital could easily stay in the black by reducing these “optional” services when facing financial challenges, but those are the times when these services are most needed. We are very proud of the hospital’s long history of meeting the health-care needs of everyone who comes to its doors and would like to thank the entire staff at Providence for their unwavering support to their mission and the people of our community.
