I am all in favor of having all voters declare their party affiliations at the time they register and only being able to vote for their party’s candidates in the primary. I believe the registered members of each party should have the right to choose the candidates they want to represent them in the general election. This would also make it more difficult for voters of one party to attempt to influence the outcome of the general election by voting against another party’s candidate who they think might win. If a person wants to vote for another party’s candidate, they can always change their registration.
California used to have registration by party system where you received your party’s ballot for the primary election, and it worked great. I don’t know whether they still use that same system.
The only problem with the California system was that the sitting governor was able to run as a favorite son in the presidential primary, which gave him full control over who his party’s presidential candidate would be. This denied the members of his party a vote in choosing the candidate they wanted to represent them in the general election. In effect, the governor tied up all of his parties votes at the party convention until or unless he released them, which left the choice up to party insiders.
