I am intrigued by the fact that religious people are forever trying to enlist nonbelievers into their fragile and unscientific world view. The current debate about keeping the “under God” clause in the Pledge of Allegiance just shows how many people would like to extend this practice of proselytizing under the state’s protective umbrella.
No thanks. I’m quite sure that any of us unenlightened heathens can find our way to the nearest church if we are so inclined, but don’t hold your breath. Until then, belief in God should not be considered a requirement of citizenship (which the “under God” clause infers).
Whenever this debate about the pledge comes up I’m always reminded of the words of Albert Einstein, who said, “There are only two things in the world that are infinite … space and human ignorance. And, I’m not sure about the first.”
