Regarding the editorial, “What does Boeing want?”: I won’t tell you what Boeing wants, because actions speak louder than words. Over the last couple of decades Boeing outsourced a good portion of their assembly work to firms outside the United States. In 2001, Boeing moved its headquarters to Chicago with the comment that Chicago is more centrally located than Seattle for headquarters activity, China and the rest of Asia notwithstanding. In 2011, Boeing moved production to Charleston, S.C., in part because one of Boeing’s unions refused to give up the right to strike. In 2013, Boeing conducted a seminar for its suppliers with the express purpose of helping them send jobs outside the United States.
I can tell you what Boeing does not want. Boeing will not countenance anything that endangers their return to shareholders. I am sorry, but beyond that return, Boeing just does not care about Washington. Why?
We cost too much. Fear not, though! We are still valued. After all, they still want us to fly in their airplanes.
