The proposed State Avenue (in Marysville) improvements that are supposed to enhance and beautify the city obviously do not accomplish their purpose. The clear intent of the city planners is to move traffic through the city as expeditiously as possible to the detriment of the commerce of the city.
Every effort is made to prevent any side movement of traffic. Not only are planters proposed to prevent left turns, but every side street, with the exception of Fourth Street (a state highway), will have restrictive “bubbles” to limit access. Even Second Street, which is a designated truck route, will have these restrictions, virtually making it impossible for trucks to navigate their way through town.
All the way from Grove Street to First Street, access to all the side streets is severely limited. There are many businesses on these streets that will suffer as a result.
Now, it appears that the least of the planners’ concerns is the health of the business community. It must be remembered that these enterprises pay commercial property taxes. The businesses themselves receive sales taxes for their products and services. Most of this revenue returns to the city to support the many services is provides for all the citizens, including the salaries of these benighted planners.
There is no doubt that State Avenue needs to be repaved. But, to do this extended “beautification” project at the expense of those who are going to pay the most for it is pure folly.
