We were very disappointed and dismayed to see the front page of the paper on Oct. 8. The headline, “Payback begins,” misrepresents our country’s actions in response to the terrorists’ attacks of September 11 on the United States.
An unprovoked act of war was perpetrated upon our nation, and, under international law, our government has a right and a responsibility to defend the citizens of our country and protect them from further attacks. Therefore, as President Bush has said, we will “”stop them” from doing this to us again. It is not “payback,” retaliation or revenge; it is simply action taken to stop further unjust aggression against the United States of America. Payback would have been the indiscriminate murder of 6,000-plus innocent Afghani civilians. That is not the goal of the president, the government nor the people of our great country. We simply are taking action to prevent terrorism from destroying our world.
