In response to a couple of recent letters to the editor about self-checkout stations in local grocery stores, I would like to offer an opinion from a cashier’s point of view. Please keep in mind the following on your next visit to one of these stores.
The self-checkout stations are there for the convenience of those who are in a hurry and would rather do-it-themselves rather than wait in line for a cashier. Regular checkouts are always available even if they do not appear to be open. All a customer has to do is simply ask for a checker and one will be immediately available to serve you.
The self-checkout stations are always manned by a cashier who is there to help shoppers and will even ring you up using the station if necessary. We have no problem doing so.
These stations have been developed with easy-to-follow instructions that anyone can understand. I watched a three-year-old little girl operate a self-checkout station while her mother and I just helped her with the heavy items. How fantastic is that?
In my store, we have not lost any jobs. On the contrary, an extra shift has been added to the schedule, which gives more hours to the checkers.
Above all, please keep in mind that checkers are people too and we have feelings. Shoppers, if you are upset about the self-checkout stations, please do not take it out on the employees. We are there to serve you.
