As a 21-year employee of the Boeing Co. and member of the IAM, I am appalled at some of the remarks made by my co-workers on the news. What ever happened to personal responsibility? Since when are there guarantees in life? Wake up people, educate yourselves, Boeing pays for it! I am working toward my second degree paid for by the company, so I may be prepared when, (yes, not if, but when) my position is outsourced.
For the past 20 years or so the American economy has slowly evolved away from the manufacturing and production industry toward a service industry. It is inevitable, just as it was to evolve from horse drawn carriages to automobiles.
If you don’t wish more for your children than 20 years behind a “rivot gun,” shame on you! My hopes for my children are much higher, such as a well-paid position in the service industry as a lawyer, doctor, accountant and so on. Where one may choose to work four days a week, instead of Boeing’s typical 5-7 days, and spend three days raising their children.
Choices, it is all about making choices. Yes, the company wants us to share the burden of medical insurance. That only applies to traditional, there are three other choices free of up-front cost, with comparable coverage. It amazes me that it takes no second thought to paying $400 a month for recreational toys, RVs, boats, etc. But when asked to help pay for $1.5 million worth of lifetime medical coverage for your family’s health, you are shocked. Where are the priorities in life? Change is difficult and inescapable.
