A recent letter writer claimed that KRKO should be able to build its new towers as a public safety service. I agree that local radio does provide an emergency service on some level, however the writer misses the point.
KRKO is currently a functioning radio station serving Snohomish County.
Allowing them to build eight new towers with the power to serve Vancouver, B.C. and Olympia does nothing to add to their service to our county. In the case of a disaster, will folks in Olympia or Vancouver choose to select KRKO to know that either the Highway 2 trestle or the Spada Lake water line is broken and down? Or would they select their own local stations for pertinent news?
If KRKO is truly trying to serve the local community, they don’t need more power. If they really care about our community, they wouldn’t be trying to irrevocably destroy the upper Snohomish River valley. This issue is about KRKO making money, not serving the community.
For one, I’m tired of our government agencies using their power to subsidize private companies at the expense of the community as a whole. Let us leave a legacy to our children, not fatten the bottom line of yet another business.
