I take exception to the letter of Dec. 23 from Kim Shuger. (“Drinking and driving: Recent revelations result in bad laws”) Obviously, Shuger has not seen tragedy strike in the loss of family or friend. Most anyone you talk to can relate to this kind of loss. Drinking and driving is rampant in our society. Alcoholism is commonplace. The idea that even one drink is OK demands a rebuttal of Shuger’s statements. Shuger states that people who drink and drive are law-abiding citizens. I call them dangerous. Shuger states that drinking and driving laws are “bad laws” created by sob sisters and crybabies. I call them people who have lost spouses, children, family and friends.
Shuger talks about loss of freedom. How about loss of life? Drive around with a sheriff for a couple of weeks and see the devastation that drinking while driving causes.
Driving a car should be a zero-tolerance drinking situation. It is never OK to drink and drive.
On my own street recently, two drunken kids drove away after slamming through a fence at the T in the road. Last August, a drunk missed the curve and slammed through our fence and into our driveway and almost ran over my husband. I cannot even imagine the drunks out there on the road!
I don’t have statistics for this uninformed person, but I will say that this problem is not a “small group” problem. It is huge. I say bring on the laws and throw the book at people who kill with their cars. Stop the innocent people from dying at the hands of someone who thinks just a few beers are OK.
Get drunks off the road and discourage anyone who drinks and drives.
