I was appalled to read Sheriff Adam Fortney’s comment that those interested in defunding police are behind the effort to recall him (“Fortney: Group pushing to defund police is behind recall,” The Herald, Sept. 12). Speaking for myself and many of our friends, we support the effort to recall Sheriff Fourtney because:
1. He violated his oath of office regarding his decision to ignore wearing of protective masks.
2. He rehired three fired officers, one of whom was filmed, after being rehired, pummeling a Mill Creek man who was face down in the road and pinned.
I have a great deal of respect for most law enforcement officers in Snohomish County, and believe most do a good job in a difficult environment. But having a sheriff who ignores laws he has sworn to enforce is unacceptable.
Having a Sheriff who ignores public health experts and places the health of seniors, and vulnerable populations at risk is unacceptable.
And rehiring tainted deputies, two of whom lied on police reports, while the third shot and killed an unarmed driver because his “Spidy sense” told him the suspect was armed, is totally unacceptable.
So no, it is not “defund the police” driving the recall effort, it is regular folks who believe Snohomish County’s top law enforcement officer has a duty to keep his oath of office, respect the guidance provided by public health experts, and discipline staff when appropriate, even if they are friends.
