I respect the writer’s right to her opinion that the Paine Field expansion to allow commercial airlines is a done deal. (Feb. 3 letter, “Fight over; focus on restrictions.”) My opinion (which I also respect): “It ain’t over ’til it’s over.”
There is always the chance that the Snohomish County Council will realize that FAA funding never was in jeopardy and that, just because they got intimidated into passing a resolution to build a terminal at Paine Field doesn’t mean they can’t change their minds. The airport has not officially been changed from general aviation status, and there are still plenty of questions to be answered, as well as a demand for a new environmental impact study that is larger in scope and more factually believable.
So, like the bride walking down the aisle, until she says “I do,” she hasn’t committed to the marriage. Hopefully our County Council will see this shotgun wedding between commercial airline service and our beautiful cities and recreational lands, and step in to object. We are counting on them to honor their commitment to keep Paine Field as a general aviation airport.
