According to military and Middle East experts, a war in Iraq will likely cost hundreds, if not thousands, of American soldiers’ lives. Do you want your son or daughter to be one of these? It will also kill many more Iraqi civilians, both through direct combat and through the eradication of crucial infrastructure; further destabilize the Middle East; alienate America’s closest allies (almost all of whom oppose an attack) commit the military to a three-to-five year stay while Iraq rebuilds. And, it will cost in the range of $60 billion-$100 billion in taxpayer dollars.
For this amount, the U.S could double humanitarian aid to poor countries, double K-12 education funding, dramatically increase federal funding for clean energy and energy (less oil dependence) efficiency. It could also reduce debts of impoverished nations, renovate public schools over 10 years, offer health insurance to all uninsured American kids, fund more mass transit to assist us become less dependent on our cars, provide public financing of federal elections – and still have billions left over.
Is this how you want to spend your tax dollars when there is no solid evidence that Saddam Hussein has weapons of mass destruction or was involved in 9-11? The U.S. military is currently building up around Iraq to the tune of a quarter million troops! Tell your representatives in Washington to stop this lunacy now before it’s too late.
