If I read it correctly, Mr. Richard Davis’ Nov. 4 column is exactly correct about the Boeing situation. (“Labor wasn’t Boeing’s only concern.”) The last six paragraphs contain the meat of the message. My summary: In this 21st century race to the bottom, it is better to have a scab job than no job.
Boeing is an international company and, pragmatically, no longer a Washington company, a Chicago company, or an American company. Boeing needs to have a manufacturing facility in the U.S. in order to bid on U.S. military contracts. Boeing doesn’t care where it is as long as the location maximizes Boeing profits.
I am confident that Boeing will offer jobs in South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, wherever, to their best employees whom they will want to keep. Boeing has traditionally used layoffs and other moves to weed out the slugs. The South is nice country if you can stand the weather.
