I’m excited – The Herald and I have actually agreed on two items: one editorial last year on election accountability and now on the fact that Washington state needs some restraint on the State Supreme Court and they endorsed Stephen Johnson. We have heard much about all the special interest dollars to the state Supreme Court campaigns; let me say on both sides. Why don’t the incumbents speak to their records? I think we should have a separate Voters Pamphlet that actually lists the issues and how incumbents voted, both for the courts and other elected positions.
The current Voters Pamphlet for incumbents present the “fluff” such as in the case of Justice Susan Owens where the narrative infers that only her opponent is receiving special interest big money and that she is an independent voice. I reviewed two of Justice Owens decisions and can tell you that she is out of touch with my expectations for a State Supreme Court justice. I am looking for a justice who will interpret the Constitution and not attempt in an activist way to write the law. I ask the voters of Washington to look at Justice Owens decisions and then I urge you to support Stephen Johnson for a true balanced approach in reviewing critical cases.
