Stephen Johnson will be an excellent Washington Supreme Court justice. His qualifications for the court are outstanding, including over 30 years of law practice. As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Johnson was widely respected by his peers. He now has wide, bipartisan support. The King County Bar Association rated him a better-qualified candidate than his incumbent opponent, Susan Owens.
Recent decisions by the Washington Supreme Court show a disturbing trend whereby judges legislate from the bench. Government is given new powers at the expense of individual rights. For instance, the court’s majority recently ruled that unelected boards can tax our citizens. It also ruled that when government takes away private property for public use it can sell the unused portions for government’s own profit. His opponent sided with both of these unfortunate rulings. But Stephen Johnson supports judicial restraint. He will decide cases according to the Constitution and laws of the state of Washington as they are written.
As attorneys-at-law, we strongly endorse Stephen Johnson for the Washington Supreme Court. He will serve with an independent mind and protect the rights of citizens.
