Regarding the Thursday article, “Hang up and drive – or else”:
So Olympia is going to ban cell phones while driving unless we use our hands-free set?
OK. I admit it. I’m guilty.
While I don’t disagree with them (after all, we have a seatbelt law and a helmet law to protect us from ourselves, too), I think there are a few other things to consider if the law is for our own good:
1. The radio – I seem to remember reading that people objected to these when they first started putting them in cars.
2. The rearview mirror-as-makeup-mirror. Duh.
3. Starbuck’s/McDonalds/Burger King/insert your favorite fast food here – you can tell who these drivers are because they have spilled, sticky beverage “stuff” all over the interior of their cars, not to mention the dropped French fries.
4. Watching TV and reading … the paper, the computer, the GPS, the MapQuest directions you printed before you left home. And finally, my favorite:
5. The kids in the backseat. Let’s ban the kids. That’s where all my dangerous swerves and distracted moments originate.
Seriously, if we are going to pass a law for our own good, make it comprehensive and honest. And acknowledge that just like speeding, it only works when you get caught.
