I read Doug Roulstone’s July 25 letter to the editor (“Rep. Larsen sides with socialists by seeking to impeach Trump”). You can always tell a Fox News consumer, can’t you? People engaged in bringing America closer to the democratic ideals that are embodied in our Declaration, Constitution and history are said to “hate America.”
In Joe McCarthy’s time, the bugaboo for false accusations was “communist.” In today’s Newspeak from the Ministry of Truth, it’s “socialist.” Mr. Roulstone says that veterans served their country to defend against the “socialism” of Soviet Russia, China and North Korea. While all three have claimed to be socialist countries, in fact the USSR and People’s Republic of China were both governed by a single party: the communist party. North Korea is governed by the Workers Party of Korea. All three were/are Stalinist dictatorships. Nobody in America wants a Stalinist dictatorship.
However, there are people here who really do hate what America stands for. We are a nation of immigrants, and these people hate immigrants. Our Statue of Liberty bears the inscription that says, “Give me your tired, your poor; Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free; The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,” but these people build walls. America celebrates diversity, but these people embrace racism, misogyny and religious intolerance. This veteran has a different point of view and invites those who hate America so much that they elected a criminal president to go live somewhere else, like Panama.
