As we come closer to the possibility of a war with Iraq, troubling questions are going unresolved. These questions don’t pertain to Iraqis, as to whether they are evil and have weapons of mass destruction. If America were to concentrate on disarming countries that had such weapons, its focus would be worldwide. We exited the ’90s with a focus on the economy, providing jobs and welfare for the American public. As America grew in manufacturing strength, the nation grew economically and the federal budget deficit was shrinking. America was within the global market, and global commerce flourished.
Today, we look to the government to provide solutions to situations that arise. We want to live in a land where peace rings out, where freedom and justice are the cornerstones of this great republic. America has a reputation of allowing justice to rule, where debate and argument thrive. Conflict resolution lies within all of us, and we need to look to ourselves to become stronger, more agile individuals because of it.
Fellow American patriots, we have learned through the short history of our homeland that we can have either guns or butter. Most of us enjoyed the days of low unemployment, low interest rates and prosperity. How can we allow ourselves to be sucked into a war where justice and debate are being ignored as though they were yesterday’s news? Why can’t we listen to countries that have tried for global domination and failed, and learn from their experiences?
We can live in peace and allow prosperity to rule rather than fearing others. There will always be those outside of our homeland who are looking to drag us down to their level. It is our choice whether we allow them to succeed.
