This is in regard to the letter to the editor from James Tobler (“Herald includes too much coverage of alcohol” The Herald, Sept. 4).
I realize that most people can drink alcohol responsibly, but we’re in the midst of an addiction crisis that is costing us a lot of money not to mention all the human suffering and human lives. Alcohol is a highly addictive drug and addicts without their favorite drugs will turn to whatever they can get.
I grew up hearing stories of how people pulled together during World War II. It’s time to pull together to help fight addiction. I suggest that the front page of a newspaper is not a good place for an article about a bar or tavern or alcohol. The “Hops and Sips” page published on Friday is in the back and that’s a good place for it.
Also, it would help a lot of addicts who are struggling to stay clean and sober if stores would place any beverage containing alcohol in the back corner. Having to navigate around the liquor section or the wine display to get a loaf of bread or to check out can be a bit much for many. People who are looking for alcohol can easily find it in the back. Let’s don’t rub addict’s noses in it.
