At a time of year when farmers are working dawn to dusk in their fields — growing food, tending herds and flocks, storing up feed for winter, and trying to get products off to markets — I must sit down and respond to The Herald article titled “Farm on the Down.”
The writer’s motive is purely political, but seems also to fly in the face of Snohomish County farmers who work their tails off. These are passionate, intelligent stewards of the land, and they do not deserve to be misrepresented by vaguely quoted statistics that have been reshuffled and taken out of context in order for the author to make an obvious statement about his dislike of our current county executive.
Thank you, Mr. Reardon, for sticking your neck out for agriculture in Snohomish County. The farmers of this county have held his feet to the fire on a number of occasions, testing his actual support of our $125.6 million industry. He has proven a willingness to not only listen but to partner with us in our efforts toward economic viability and diversity in agriculture (and, yes, that is turf to dairy, Mr. North).
Perhaps the saddest aspect of this article is how Mr. North could have the gall to tie our farming community to the sad story of marijuana production. Badly done, Mr. North, shame on you!
To my fellow farmers, from small scale to large production, keep up the good work that you do. Don’t become discouraged by misrepresented numbers and extremely poor journalism.
