The advent of 527 groups has left us all wondering how we went from talking about current issues facing the country to a war that took place 35 years ago. I find myself, as an independent-minded voter, watching not the ads, but the reaction from each candidate.
John Kerry called on the president to denounce the swift boat ads, which the president did, even going so far as to call Kerry’s wartime service honorable. No doubt that was against the wishes of Bush’s advisers, who must have felt as though the Democrats were getting a taste of their own 527 medicine. Now, the president’s own wartime service is under assault from multiple fronts. I am still waiting for John Kerry to voice his objection to these attacks, and so far the silence is deafening.
Regardless of the attacks, it would be nice to see Kerry return the honorable gesture and denounce the attacks on the president’s service. The fact is he did serve, and was honorably discharged, which is more than the vast majority of citizens in this country can claim.
