This letter is directed at those who are undecided or who plan to vote no on the Monroe School bond or levy, and to those who plan to vote yes.
To those who would vote no or are undecided: The education we provide our children is absolutely critical to helping our community prepare for the future. How we educate them now is how they will lead our community in the future. Our schools offer support to low-income families, home schooling families, and children with special learning needs. Schools offer programs to foster children’s passion for math, art, science, technology, horticulture and many other areas. The money for many of these activities is from, and for, our own community, not from federal or state government. A yes vote not only gives you more control over what we offer our kids in school, it’s one of the most generous gifts we can offer our children – the opportunity to explore all opportunities.
To those who plan to vote yes: In addition to voting yes, I encourage you to make a small donation to the Citizens For Monroe Public Schools Committee. A $15 or $20 donation – one pizza or a night at the movies – is a small investment for something as invaluable as our children’s education.
Finally, to all voters: Sept. 11 has profoundly affected our lives. As I listen to reports about the Taliban’s educational system, and the extremes that it both imposed and created, I am more than ever committed to doing whatever I can to support an educational system that fosters open minds and equality of opportunity.
