A lot of us were relieved to hear that the Snohomish County PUD has given General Manager Steve Klein a significant raise, particularly given the fact that utility executives with his talent and ability are making a lot more than $308,000 in the private sector.
Steve Klein’s record as GM is astonishing. His leadership ability has, in effect, turned around a PUD headed for disaster. He has stepped forward with a renewable energy program that is nothing short of remarkable. He has literally saved ratepayers millions of dollars through extremely competent executive management of one of the largest utilities in this state. And for those of you who don’t know, this utility he manages also supplies much of the water consumed in this county.
I just hope this pay increase is enough to retain his services over the long, difficult times ahead for energy issues and their impact on the economy of Snohomish County.
