Koster, council using kids as pawns

Talk about blowing smoke. Snohomish County Councilman John Koster’s July 27 letter, “Ballfields: Dunshee, ‘friends’ thwarted efforts,” made me gag. He writes, “We must work together to find long-term, reasonable solutions that will meet the needs of those who live here now and those who will be arriving in the future. Those who would continue to thwart the essential needs of our community and youth athletic programs need to put their political agendas aside and come to the table for a serious discussion of a reasonable and legal solution to this matter.”

He and his pro growth council friends are doing the thwarting, not Dunshee and his ‘friends.’ Our Snohomish County Council will make room for Andy Skotdal’s antenna farm on agricultural land by overturning two hearing examiners’ decisions against it. They attempt to make room for Dwayne Lane’s car dealership on agricultural land, but for non-profit ball associations they refuse to make room or take responsibility at the county level.

The Snohomish County Council is using our kids as a pawn to change state law rather than allow existing ballfields to remain or create legal ones. Players and their parents are being manipulated by John Koster and his council. I agree with Jonnee Denton’s letter on July 23: “The parents, who understandably want more ballfields for their kids, need to take a close look at what is being proposed before they back any proposal to change state laws on the use of farmland.”
