Regarding the editorial, “Official’s political work displays lack of discretion”: John Koster and I have very little in common in our views on politics. I consider myself a liberal. I viewed many of his actions as a county councilmember with disdain. I certainly disagree with him on the definition of “patriot.” I will even admit to some amount of glee that he was finally forced out of his position by that favorite child of conservatism — term limits.
But … to penalize a person in anyway for their legal expression of their beliefs on their own time with their own resources is outrageous. This goes against every basic tenet of our system of government. I detected some discomfort in this paper’s editorial, some acknowledgment of his “right to voice his opinion” but you squelched your conscience enough to advocate his removal. Absolutely outrageous!
John Koster’s work should be scrutinized. If he shows bias or favoritism that impedes his ability to be a good ombudsman for this county, he should be re-directed or let go. So should any public employee. I have dealt with Mr. Koster in his current role. He impressed me as being honest, hardworking, a good listener. He returned my phone call, for starters, which is more than I can say about our county executive or several others in Planning and Development Services. Based on this, I give Mr. Koster a favorable rating in his job performance. If the day comes when John Koster is shown to let his personal beliefs interfere with his job, fire him. Until then, his political views are none of our business.
