Again, I am suprised by the general public’s complete lack of understanding of the reality of the situation. The traffic congestion problems in the Marysville area are solely to be blamed on the Tulalip Tribes.
They are exempt from paying all enviromental and mitigation fees that are required of non-tribal developers. They are also exempt from paying any taxes to the state from the profits of their business enterprises. Is it any wonder why the City of Marysville does not have the funds to solve the problems created by the Tulalip Tribes?
And it is only going to get worse: the people of this state are going to pass a initiative banning smoking in public places; however, this law cannot be enforced on tribal lands. Marysville’s local businesses will suffer as smoking customers frequent their establishments less in favor of the non-taxed tribal businesses. This was evidenced in the loss of non-tribal business in Pierce County following their Health Department’s passing of a similar regulation. When do we stop giving and giving and receiving nothing in return?
