Steve Baker wants to present the “facts” on Island Crossing (“County GOP has balanced approach,” Jan. 23, Letters), beginning with the ludicrous claim that the City of Arlington, not Dwayne Lane, is the “main proponent” of urbanizing that unfortunate area of floodplain.
Don’t make me laugh. It was Lane and John Henken, not the city, who bought the farmland in question 20 years ago and have been trying to get it redesignated ever since. (That’s two owners, by the way, not 23.) It was Lane, not the city, who in the process lost lawsuits all the way to the state Supreme Court. It was Lane, not the city, who persuaded the present County Council to redesignate yet again. And finally, it’s Lane who is appealing the Growth Management Hearings Board’s decision to reject that action. The court papers read “Dwayne Lane, Intervenor,” not “City of Arlington.” Only a fool would believe that Lane has invested all that time and money at the secret behest of Arlington and its citizens. Maybe Baker simply needs to convince us that Lane does business to please the City Council, instead of the other way around.
